Diego Costa and Cesc Fabregas helped Chelsea win the transfer window... but it would've been great to see Xabi Alonso back in the Premier League

  • The summer transfer window closed on Monday night
  • Chelsea strengthened their squad and sold their unwanted players
  • Diego Costa has helped fire Jose Mourinho's side to the top of the table
  • Danny Welbeck has a point to prove after leaving Manchester United
  • The 23-year-old joined Arsenal in a £16million deadline day deal
  • Hull have made some inspired signings, including Hatem Ben Arfa on loan
  • Sandro will give QPR a strong presence in central midfield
  • Xabi Alonso and Toni Kroos would've been great additions to the Premier League but both moved elsewhere

With the transfer window firmly closed until January, Premier League clubs up and down the land have a few months to reflect on their summer business.
But which sides had a window to remember? Who surprised their rivals with some wise acquisitions? And which players who chose to go elsewhere would've been the biggest asset to England's top-flight?
We asked our three wise men - Jamie Carragher, Martin Keown and Jamie Redknapp - those questions and more. Here's what they had to say.

Which team 'won' the transfer window?
JAMIE CARRAGHER: Chelsea, without a doubt. They got most of their business done early and always seemed to be in control. The way Diego Costa has started is so impressive and we've still not seen Filipe Luis, who is a top player. And the money they've spent is not too bad when you compare it to United.
JAMIE REDKNAPP: Chelsea did their business early and got £50million for David Luiz. Further down the table, Aston Villa did well to keep Ron Vlaar. And I really want Tom Cleverley to do well. He's been a scapegoat for too long.

MARTIN KEOWN: It's a full house. Chelsea won it the day they sold David Luiz for £50m. And then they got £28m for Romelu Lukaku. Unbelievable business. Financial fair play rules have made them become better negotiators.
Is Danny Welbeck good business for Arsenal?
KEOWN: It is good business. United are becoming a team of galacticos and he doesn’t fit into that. I’m not sure United have ever been convinced about him. It will be exciting for him to work with Arsene Wenger. He improves young players and has a superb record with top strikers: Klinsmann, Weah, Bergkamp, Henry.
Welbeck is not clinical in front of goal but he’ll practise that. I remember Emmanuel Adebayor rarely hitting the target when he first joined Arsenal but Wenger had him practising and the improvement was phenomental. He’s the same price as Mario Balotelli but Welbeck will be here for the long term, Balotelli won’t. My only worry is that he could be in mourning about leaving such a great club. He needs to realise he has joined another and can finally take centre stage.
CARRAGHER: I can see the positives of his move from both sides. His goalscoring record isn’t great so I can see why United have moved him on. A lot of people at United will be loath to see a local lad go. And he has real pace, which United don’t have much of. He’s a good fit for Arsenal but he’ll play a similar role: sometimes he’ll be out wide, sometimes through the middle and sometimes on the bench. Is he really going to be their No 1 striker?
REDKNAPP: I like him and always hear good things about his attitude and personality. He’s a good athlete but doesn’t score enough goals and doesn’t get in the right positions enough. I’m pleased for Arsenal fans that they signed someone. Welbeck is going there with a real point to prove.
Outside the heavyweights, who got the best deal?
REDKNAPP: Hull signed match- winners in Gaston Ramirez and Hatem Ben Arfa. And I won’t apologise for saying it but Sandro is an excellent signing — he’s a monster, exactly what QPR needed. He’s got a tremendous attitude and work ethic and is an infectious character who will rub off on everyone.
KEOWN: Hull landing Ben Arfa. He was never a bad player, he just fell out with Alan Pardew. He has so much ability.
CARRAGHER: I agree on Sandro. He’s a big strong player, who impressed me for Tottenham. He has a physical presence and QPR needed Premier League experience. They just have to keep him fit.
One signing you wish had happened...
CARRAGHER: I’d have loved to have seen Xabi Alonso come back to the Premier League instead of moving to Bayern Munich. He’s such a good passer of the ball.
KEOWN: Toni Kroos. I don’t know why Van Gaal didn’t want him. Instead he went to Real Madrid. He passes the ball so cleanly.
REDKNAPP: I agree with Jamie on Alonso and would have also liked to have seen Arsenal sign Falcao. They are so close to being title contenders.

Danny Welbeck signs for Arsenal as Manchester United sell striker for £16m

  • Arsenal have completed a £16m transfer for England international Welbeck
  • The Manchester United striker arrives as a replacement for Olivier Giroud who has been sidelined with a broken foot until the new year
  • Welbeck was training at Arsenal's London Colney training base on Monday with the England team ahead of the international against Norway
  • He has signed a five-year contract with the Gunners
  • Tottenham were hoping to land him but Arsene Wenger made a late move
  • The Gunners had earlier missed out on Monaco striker Radamel Falca
  • Arsene Wenger has made a dramatic move to solve his lack of goal power by agreeing a £16million deal to sign England striker Danny Welbeck.
The Arsenal manager, in Italy to keep a promise to play in a fund raising football match, still made sure that charity began at home as he helped beat off a bid from Spurs to land the Manchester United star.
Welbeck, told he could leave Old Trafford after failing to impress Louis van Gaal since the Dutchman’s arrival this summer, was originally offered on a season long loan deal for a bargain £3m.
But the 23-year-old was determined to force a permanent move to give himself a fresh start and that helped Arsenal force down United’s original £18m asking price before settling a five-year contract for the player.
Wenger had several times claimed he wasn’t in the market for a new striker, despite losing last season’s top scorer Olivier Giroud until after Christmas through injury.
But that emerged as a smokescreen as he made failed overtures for first Loic Remy then Radamel Falcao, before turning his attention to Welbeck.
And with Tottenham put off by the size of the numbers involved, Arsenal officials worked late into the night to complete the formalities.
Wenger has long been an admirer of Welbeck and has considered a move for him in the past, but he had always viewed the United man as a player who is best suited to playing on the flanks, posing a goal threat from wide.
Sportsmail can reveal that Wenger originally had Welbeck earmarked as a possible replacement for Lukas Podolski, who was set to leave Arsenal earlier this summer. But with Arsenal so short of striking options following Giroud’s serious ankle injury, he will be asked to play in a central role for the Gunners.
Welbeck, who has 26 caps for England at the age of 23, has eight international goals. He has scored 20 league goals in 90 appearances for United since 2008.

Radamel Falcao signs for Manchester United in £6m season-long loan deal

  • Manchester United have won the race to sign Radamel Falcao
  • Colombian has joined on season-long loan and cost £12million
  • He has agreed a deal worth £280,000-a-week
  • Old Trafford club saw off Arsenal and Manchester City for striker
  • Juventus were also interested in taking him to Italy
  • United signed Falcao amid fears of niggling injuries to Robin van Persie
  • Danny Welbeck will be sold while Javier Hernandez has joined Real Madrid
  • Colombian striker will wear the No 9 shirt at Old Trafford this season
  • Manchester United have shown their financial muscle by completing a stunning deadline-day deal for Radamel Falcao after moneybags neighbours City were put off by the staggering cost.
Monaco’s Colombia striker arrived on a private jet to tie up a season-long loan to Old Trafford for a fee of £6million, with an option to buy him next summer for a further £46m.
Falcao told www.manutd.com: 'I am delighted to be joining Manchester United on loan this season. Manchester United is the biggest club in the world and is clearly determined to get back to the top.
'I am looking forward to working with Louis van Gaal and contributing to the team’s success at this very exciting period in the club’s history.'
Manager Van Gaal added: 'I am delighted Radamel has joined us on loan this season. He is one of the most prolific goalscorers in the game. His appearance-to-goal ratio speaks for itself and, when a player of this calibre becomes available, it is an opportunity not to be missed.'
But United have had to pay the 28-year-old around £280,000 a week to persuade him to leave the tax haven. Falcao, who will wear the No 9 shirt at Old Trafford this season, was initially offered to English clubs over the weekend for personal terms of £345,000 a week, and while City officials held talks with Monaco and Falcao’s representatives, they were put off by the size of the deal, which also deterred Arsenal.
That left the door open for United to make their move on Sunday night, just four days after agreeing a British record fee of £59.7m with Real Madrid for Angel di Maria.
United wanted another striker because they have concerns that Robin van Persie still has problems from the knee injury he suffered near the end of last season and could yet need surgery.
It is understood United persuaded Falcao to accept the same sum they are paying the Argentina midfielder, which is slightly less than the £300,000 a week earned by captain Wayne Rooney. United also tied up the £14m signing of Ajax midfielder Daley Blind, who joins Ander Herrera, Luke Shaw and Marcos Rojo at Old Trafford after a summer that has seen them spend around £160million.
Blind, 24, said: ‘It is a real honour to sign for Manchester United. Louis van Gaal is a tremendously talented coach, I have worked with him at Ajax and also for Holland and I cannot wait to work with him at the biggest club in the world.’
Van Gaal welcomed a player he used on the left side of Holland’s defence at the World Cup but is more likely to deploy as a holding midfielder at United.
‘I am delighted Daley has signed for the club,’ said Van Gaal. ‘He is a very intelligent and versatile footballer who can play in many positions. Daley is a great reader of the game and he has played under my philosophy over a number of years.’
Falcao’s arrival meant striker Danny Welbeck was allowed to join rivals Arsenal in a £16m deal, while Javier Hernandez went to Real Madrid on a season-long loan, with an option for a £16m permanent move.

Fernando Torres breaks AC Milan medical records after sealing move from Chelsea

    • Chelsea striker Fernando Torres has joined AC Milan on a two-year loan
    • The Spaniard's fitness levels impressed the club's medical staff according to manager Filippo Inzaghi
    • Torres watched from the stands as the Rossoneri beat Lazio 3-1 on Sunday
Fernando Torres' supreme fitness helped him break all previous records when undergoing his AC MIlan medical, boss Filippo Inzaghi has revealed.
Torres ended a disappointing four years at Chelsea after his £50million switch from Liverpool, when he completed a two-year loan deal with the Rossoneri.
And Inzaghi has revealed the Spanish striker has made an instant impact at the club before he has even kicked a ball.
Inzaghi said after their 3-1 win over Lazio: 'He (Torres) will give us a big hand and the opportunity to make the most of counter-attacks.
'He had his medical tests today and set a new record for the team.
He added: 'What are our objectives? There are perhaps three teams who have something more, but with hunger, temperament and our fans back at San Siro, we could be a surprise.'

Arsene Wenger flies to Rome on transfer deadline day to take part in charity match

    • Arsenal attempting to sign a striker on final day of the window
    • But Gunners boss is booked for charity match in Italy
    • Andrea Pirlo and Gianluigi Buffon will also appear in Match for Peace
Arsene Wenger will struggle to be involved in any late-night transfer bids on deadline day, because he is taking part in a charity event in Rome.
Pictures of the Gunners boss at Heathrow airport have emerged on twitter, sparking excitement among Arsenal fans about a potential new signing.
But Sportsmail can reveal that Wenger is actually booked to referee in the 'Match for Peace', alongside players such as Leo Messi, Andrea Pirlo and Ronaldinho, at Roma's Stadio Olimpico on Monday night.
The event is to promote inter-religious peace through sporting engagement, and has attracted several global superstars.
However, Arsenal are still attempting to sign players before the transfer deadline passes on Monday night.
The club missed out on Monaco striker Radamel Falcao to Manchester United and Chelsea's new signing Loic Remy from QPR, but are still hopeful of bringing in cover for injured forward Olivier Giroud.

Radamel Falcao signs for Manchester United in £12m season-long loan

    • Manchester United have won the race to sign Radamel Falcao
    • Colombian will join on season-long loan and cost £12million
    • He is believed to have agreed a deal worth £200,000-a-week
    • Old Trafford club saw off Arsenal and Manchester City for striker
    • Juventus were also interested in taking him to Italy
    • United signed Falcao amid fears of niggling injuries to Robin van Persie
    • Danny Welbeck will be sold while Javier Hernandez has joined Real Madrid
Manchester United have won the race to sign Radamel Falcao from Monaco on a one-year loan deal.
The striker will cost the Old Trafford club £12million and follows Angel di Maria, Daley Blind, Luke Shaw, Ander Herrera and Marcos Rojo in joining manager Louis van Gaal at the club.
The 28-year-old Colombian has yet to agree personal terms - he will reportedly earn £200,000-a-week - but that is expected to be a formality and he is believed to be on his way to Manchester in a private jet.
The potent striker had been expected to join Manchester City on deadline day while Arsenal also entered the race late last week.
But United threw their hat into the ring amid fears of persistent niggling injuries to Robin van Persie and will offset Falcao's arrival by selling Danny Welbeck while Javier Hernandez has joined Real Madrid.
Indeed, Madrid were frontrunners for Falcao and the player himself posted - and later deleted - a tweet on Saturday appearing to confirm the move.
But the Spanish giants, who sold Di Maria to United for £60m last week, instead opted to sign Hernandez who had struggled to force his way into Van Gaal's plans.
After completing his move, Falcao will join up with his national team ahead of their friendly against Brazil in Miami on Friday night.
The clash will be a repeat of the World Cup quarter-final which Brazil won 2-1 although Falcao missed the tournament through injury.
Falcao became the youngest debutant in the Colombian second tier when he played for Lanceros Boyaca in 1999 at the age of 13.
He joined River Plate in 2005 for £300,000 and spent four years in Argentina before moving to Porto for £3m. Seventy two goals in just 87 games thrust him into the spotlight as one of Europe's hottest strikers and Monaco pounced last year, paying a reported £47m.
But despite his palatial surroundings in the tax haven, Falcao was desperate to challenge himself in a more demanding environment and is believed to have reduced his demands in order to secure a move before the transfer deadline on Monday night.
United's poor start to the Premier League season continued on Saturday when they drew 0-0 with new boys Burnley at Turf Moor.
The stalemate highlighted Van Gaal's problems up front with his side having scored just two goals in their opening three games.
On Sunday night, City had moved into pole position to land Falcao, who is rated at £50m. But their deal was dependent on Alvaro Negredo returning to Spain with Valencia.
Director of football Txiki Begiristain is understood to have held talks with Monaco officials at last Thursday’s Champions League draw in the principality.
Earlier, Sportsmail revealed that Arsenal initiated first contact with Falcao's advisers on Friday, informing them of their desire to take the striker on loan, not a permanent deal.

Victor Valdes in talks with Liverpool over shock free transfer (but former Barcelona keeper won't be fit until December!)

    • Victor Valdes is negotiating a transfer to Liverpool on transfer deadline day
    • Former Barcelona goalkeeper is available on free transfer
    • Spain keeper will not be fit until December due to cruciate ligament injury
    • Transfer deadline is 11pm on Monday night
Liverpool are in talks over a deal to sign former Barcelona goalkeeper Victor Valdes.
Valdes is a free agent after his release from his boyhood club this summer but, after suffering a cruciate ligament injury in March, the former Barca No 1 will not be fit until December.
The 32-year-old Catalan keeper would provide cover for Brendan Rodgers' first-choice in goal, Simon Mignolet.
Valdes had been set for a move to mega-rich French side Monaco, but his injury put paid to the move.
Rodgers had originally planned to move for Alex McCarthy from Reading, but the highly-rated England keeper is set to join QPR for £6million.
Valdes is a legend at the Nou Camp after keeping goal for over 500 matches for the La Liga giants, winning three Champions League finals and six La Liga titles.
Liverpool were impressive during a 3-0 demolition of Tottenham at White Hart Lane on Sunday. Raheem Sterling, Steven Gerrard and Alberto Moreno all scored while Mario Balotelli impressed on his debut.
Mignolet also proved his worth to Rodgers with a stunning save from a thunderous volley by Nacer Chadli.
But the arrival of Valdes would ensure the Belgian had serious competition for the No 1 jersey at Anfield.
